Son dead, mother seriously injured after lorry hits them on A1(M)

A 16-YEAR-OLD boy was killed after he and his mother were hit by a lorry on the A1(M) last night.

Their car had collided with the central reservation on the northbound carriageway, one mile north of junction 57 near Richmond, North Yorkshire at 9.55pm.

When they got out of their Peugeot 307 they were involved in a second collision with a lorry.

The son died of his injuries while the mother, 46, was taken to Darlington Memorial Hospital with life threatening injuries.

Insp Dave Sutcliffe, of North Yorkshire police said: "An initial collision occurred between a Peugeot 307 and the central crash barrier which left the vehicle stationary.

"The occupants got out and were struck, in second road traffic collision, by a lorry going in the same direction."

A spokesman for North Yorkshire Police added: "Both of the people are from Hebburn in Northumbria. The family has been informed but we are not yet in a position to release the identity of the boy who died."
