MOTORISTS across the North-East are being warned to be careful because of increased chances of icy roads.
The Met Office has issued a flash warning of extreme weather because of falling temperatures combined with wintry showers.
A statement on the Met Office website said tonight: "Showers will become more isolated this evening and tonight.
"However, as temperatures fall, widespread ice will form on untreated roads and pavements. These icy conditions will last well into Thursday.
"The public are advised to take extra care and refer to the Highways Agency for further advice on traffic disruption on motorways and trunk roads."
The website also added that snow showers are expected to affect the region, particularly along the coast and hills, on New Year's Eve.
It added: "Snow showers are expected to affect many areas but especially coasts and hills exposed to the north.
"The showers may be heavy and give fresh accumulations of 2 to 5cm in some places and locally 10cm.
"Icy patches on untreated surfaces may become widespread."
