More snow on the way

THE region is bracing itself for further blizzard-like conditions this weekend, with forecasters predicting up to five centimetres of snowfall, while temperatures look set to plummet well below freezing.

But weather experts say snow showers will be interspersed with sunny periods across the North-East and North Yorkshire.

Billy Payne, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "Saturday is looking mainly dry and bright after an early frost.

"There will be some snow around, spreading south throughout the day, which will clear through the evening.

"The region could see as much as five centimetres of snow in some areas.

"Saturday night into Sunday morning is looking frosty, while Sunday is looking drier with a few blustery showers making their way across the Pennines.

"It will be a generally cold weekend."

Mr Payne said the top daytime temperature both tomorrow and Sunday would be three degrees Celsius, dropping to as low as minus seven degrees and minus four on Sunday.

I drove from Durham to Stockton yesterday morning. 20 miles on Durham County roads, and all of 200 yards had been gritted. Get to Stockton roads, and there was the grit. I dont know where the Durham gritters were, or any of this £1m NHS cash, but they weren't on the A177/A689 at all.
