THE region’s best schools and colleges have been highlighted in an annual report by education inspectors.
More than 100 schools and colleges in the North-East and North Yorkshire were classed as “outstanding” by Ofsted, the Office for Standards in Education, Children’s Services and Skills, during 2008-9.
A further 130 childminders and childcare centres were given a top rating.
In Durham and Darlington, 20 schools, 12 childcare providers, two adult learning providers and one social care provider were judged to be outstanding.
George Dent Nursery School, in Darlington, appears on the list for the fourth time.
Headteacher Carol Dawson said: “This is public affirmation of the continuing outstanding work that is going on in partnership with the children and their families.”
New College Durham also made the list.
John Widdowson, principal and chief executive, said: “This is a great accomplishment for the college and one of which we are extremely proud of.
“The inspection report represents a clear endorsement of our ability to offer the very best learning experiences.”
In North Yorkshire and York, 20 schools, 37 childcare providers and four social care providers were judged to be outstanding.
These include Leyburn Primary School, in Wensleydale, Hutton Rudby Primary School, in Hutton Rudby, near Stokesley, and the adult learning centre at Askham Grange Prison, in York.
Oatlands Infant School, in Harrogate, has secured four successive outstanding reports from Ofsted, the latest of which was announced last December.
Headteacher Janet Davis said: “Inspectors recognise that the school has a lot to commend it and that we continuously strive to move forward, and not to rest on our laurels.”
Nationally, nearly seven out of ten of schools were good or outstanding – more than ever.
Ofsted chief inspector Christine Gilbert congratulated everyone involved in the outstanding schools, colleges and childcare centres.
“This is good news, not just for the providers but for the children, young people and learners who benefit from such excellent services,” she said.
