AN ELDERLY woman was found dead in her Redcar home last night.

Firefighters were called to a property on Oak Road, at around 9.40pm, to reports of a house fire.

The body of an 84-year-old woman, who has yet to be named, was found in the house but it is not yet known whether she died as a result of the fire or due to other causes.

Firefighters spent an hour ventilating the property and an investigation into the small fire was under way this morning.

Peter May, Watch Manager at Redcar fire station, said: "On arrival the house was found to be smoke-logged but the fire was out.

"Unfortunately an elderly lady was found to be deceased at the scene.

"A full fire brigade and police investigation is underway. At this moment in time there does not seem to be any suspicious circumstances."

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police confirmed that the death is not being treated as suspicious.
