Funeral date for Afghan casualty

THE funeral of a North Yorkshire soldier who was killed Afghanistan, will take place this week.

Hundreds are expected to turn out to pay their last respects to Serjeant Phillip Scott near his home town of Richmond.

The funeral of Sjt Scott, who was married with two children and a stepson, will be held at Aske Hall Chapel, on Friday, at 1pm.

The service will be followed by a private interment.

The 30-year-old was killed in a bomb blast earlier this month while he was helping to clear explosives in Sangin.

A much-respected member the 3rd Battalion, The Rifles, he was a veteran of the conflict in Iraq and was serving in Afghanistan with his brother, Robin.

Born in Malton, North Yorkshire, he grew up in Richmond, where his father, Mike, is the gamekeeper for the Zetland Estate.

He joined the Army in 2001, following a stint working on the Zetland Estate after he left Richmond School.

Known as Scotty to his friends, he saw service in Northern Ireland as well as Iraq and Afghanistan and had worked as a training officer in Catterick Garrison.
