AN appeal for bell ringers rang out across a town over the weekend.
With numbers dwindling in Hartlepool, the Southern District of the Durham and Newcastle Association of Bell Ringers issued a rallying call to add to the four remaining members performing the historic art of campanology.
The town boasts three churches, containing a total of 26 bells, while another set of six have recently been restored by Hartlepool Borough Council in the Art Gallery, in Church Square.
On Saturday, members of the association were in the gallery with a selection of hand bells to encourage people to try their hand.
“Ringing is for anyone from eight to 80,” said branch chairman Richard Turner. “Although some of the big bells are quite heavy, it is more coordination than strength that is needed to make a competent ringer.”
Anyone interested in finding out more about the traditional hobby is asked to contact Father Graeme Buttery at St Oswald’s Church on 01429-273201.
