FRIDAY'S torrential rain is continuing to cause flooding problems today as water levels rise on rivers across the North-East.
The River Wear has burst its banks in Durham City, with many roads being closed and homes and businesses affected in the city, and nearby Chester-le-Street.
Elsewhere, the A684 through Morton-on-Swale, near Northallerton, North Yorkshire has been closed by flooding.
A spokesman for Durham Police said Durham City was heavily congested as a result of numerous roads being closed.
"Some people are visiting the area particularly to view the floods which is increasing congestion," he said.
"We ask that unless your visit is absolutely necessary, you avoid the area until the water levels subside.
"The emergency services are working in partnership to protect property and allay fears the flooding is causing people."
Residents are being advised to ring the Environment Agency floodline on 0845-9881188 for more information on the flooding situation in their area.
