Children told of the ultimate sacrifice

A MAYOR toured a town’s schools to launch this year’s poppy appeal.

Yesterday, Councillor Ian Haszeldine, Mayor of Darlington, visited Gurney Pease Primary School to talk to the children about the appeal, ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

Headteacher Sandra Battensby said: “It was a super visit. The children were very interested in what the mayor had to say about the poppy appeal.

Major Bob Jones came in to talk to the pupils about the current conflicts, the two world wars and the significance of the poppy and the Remembrance Day.”

During the talk, the mayor also took part in the school’s celebration assembly where he presented awards to pupils.
