POLICE are investigating after a man was killed when his motorcycle was in collision with a fire engine.

The incident happened on the A170, close to the village of Wilton, near Pickering, North Yorkshire, at about 2.30pm yesterday.

Four crew members in the fire engine were unhurt.

The vehicle was returning to its base in Pickering at the time. The crew had been on standby to deal with flooding in the area, but were not needed.

Inspector Nigel Slater, of North Yorkshire Police, said: "A Honda motorcycle, travelling towards Pickering, was in collision with a North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service pump, travelling in the opposite direction.

"As a result of the crash, the male rider received fatal injuries, and was declared dead at the scene."

The road was closed for about five hours, while police carried out an investigation of the scene.

Witnesses are asked to call traffic constable Richard Hammond, of Scarborough road policing group, on 08457-60-60-247.
