PANTOMIME producers have launched an X Factor-style competition to give someone a rare chance to appear on stage this Christmas.
Darlington Civic Theatre and Qdos Pantomimes have teamed up to cast a member of the public in the role of the Princess in this year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk.
Anyone who wants to appear in the panto is invited to perform their favourite song at the first round of auditions for Panto Princess, which is supported by The Northern Echo.
Producers will hold initial auditions at the theatre on Sunday, September 21, with the final at Darlington Arts Centre two weeks later.
Judges will select one person to take part in the production, at Darlington Civic Theatre from Saturday, December 6 to January 18.
Panto producer Michael Harrison, the managing director of Qdos Pantomimes, said: “This is a terrific opportunity to be part of the Civic Theatre panto team and play your part in Darlington’s biggest ever pantomime.
“No previous stage experience is necessary. However, those wishing to audition for the role of the Princess should be between the ages of 16 and 30, have a great singing voice and should be available from Monday, November 24, when rehearsals start, to the end of the run on Sunday, January 18.”
One of the judges, Duncan Bannatyne, said: “I am thrilled to be part of such a fantastic project.
“I think it is great the Civic Theatre is offering local young females the chance to star in a professional role in the pantomime, and it is exciting for me to be involved in choosing the right person.”
Leading the cast will be Ian Reddington, better known as Vernon from Coronation Street, who will play Fleshcreep, the giant’s henchman.
Actor Steve Arnott will return for another panto at the Civic Theatre, this time in the role of Dame Trot. Pete Hillier, from children’s television, will play Jack.
Last year, a record 46,000 people attended Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Tickets are £11 to £18.50, on 01325-486555 or at darlington arts.co.uk
