THIS is the devastation caused to a Mercedes car after it hit a stray cow.
Police renewed an appeal for witnesses yesterday, following the accident in which the driver was badly injured.
The 34-year-old man, from Leeds, remained in a critical but stable condition last night, after the crash in the early hours of Tuesday, on the A66 at Bowes, County Durham.
The driver is being treated in The James Cook University Hospital, Middlesbrough, for head injuries and a broken leg. His family asked for his name to be withheld.
His 23-year-old girlfriend, a front seat passenger, suffered severe shock, but was otherwise unhurt.
PC Ian Haigh said the cow, which was killed in the collision, was black and the road was unlit, so there would be almost no time for the driver to see it and react.
Anyone who was on the A66 and who saw any cows on the carriageway, is asked to contact police on 0191-375-2159.
