Bikewise is monster success

THOUSANDS of people converged on the headquarters of a North-East police force to enjoy one of the biggest days in the biking calender.

Now in its 14th year, Durham Police’s BikeWise event featured a range of attractions, including displays by a police helicopter, police dogs and motorcycle activities at the Aykley Heads police headquarters in Durham City.

Organiser Sergeant Ian Rodgers said: “BikeWise was originally set up to improve links between the police and local bikers.

“It has been a tremendous success over the years and helped our efforts to improve road safety.

“Over the years, it has become a great attraction not just to bike enthusiasts, but also many other people who enjoy the attractions on offer and see it as a great, family day out. We have had an excellent turnout.”

One of the attractions on the day was a parade of vintage bikes, some dating from the Thirties.

The display has been put together with the help of local bike clubs, and among the vehicles featured was a classic 1958 Royal Enfield, which for many years was used by officers on the county’s roads.

The motorcycle was driven by PC Mick Alder, who plans to retire next summer when he completes his 30 years service – and has been involved in every show since the first in 1995.

It was adapted for police use and when PC Alder took his skid pan training, the Enfield was the bike he rode.

Darlington-based stunt rider Dave Coates, who has become a firm favourite at the event, put on a display, while there was a demonstration by some of the dogs and their handlers.

Featuring in the main arena for the first time were young members of the Mini Moto Club, set up to divert children from the streets and give them the opportunity to learn motorcycling skills.

People were also given the chance to go for a spin on the force’s skid pan.

British Supersport and Superstock rider Steve Brogan was on hand to meeting fans and signing autographs.

BikeWise has raised more than £65,000 for local charities since it started and organisers are expecting to raise tens of thousands of pounds from yesterday’s event.
