Inquiry as girl, 15, burnt on sunbed

HEALTH inspectors have started an investigation after a 15-year-old girl was burnt so badly on a tanning salon bed that she needed hospital treatment.

Schoolgirl Katie Turner was rushed to casualty suffering from severe sunburn, sickness, and headaches after spending more than 20 minutes under the lamps.

Health campaigners have called for a change in the law to ban the use of tanning beds by children - a call supported by Katie's mother, Elizabeth Turner.

She said: "My daughter was burnt red raw - I have never seen her in such a state. She was in absolute agony and could hardly stand. She should never have been allowed to use a sunbed for so long."

Government guidelines state that UV lamps should not be used by under-16s - but it is not a legal requirement.

Nina Gould, of the British Association of Dermatologists, told The Northern Echo that laws should be introduced to ban children from using sunbeds.

"This law has already been passed in Scotland, which is fantastic, but we want the rest of the UK to follow," she said.

"Being burnt this badly increases your chances of getting melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer."

More than 100 deaths from skin cancer every year in the UK are thought to be linked to the use of sunbeds.

Recent research by Which?

magazine found three per cent of eight to 15-year-olds, 170,000 young people, have used a sunbed despite accepted advice about the health dangers.

Ministers are considering draft guidelines drawn up by the Health and Safety Executive that would result in tougher regulation of the sunbed industry.

As well as banning children, salons would have to be staffed at all times and unsupervised, coin operated sunbeds would be banned.

The Darlington teenager went to the salon with a schoolfriend and lay on the bed for 12 minutes. She returned later that afternoon thinking the session had not worked and was allowed back on for another nine minutes.

By the end of the day she needed to be treated with antihistamines and painkillers at Darlington Memorial Hospital's accident and emergency unit.

Ms Turner, 34, of Hutton Road, Darlington, said: "Katie has asked me before if she could go on a sunbed, but I have always said no. She's far too young and she has lilywhite skin.

"But kids being kids, she went after school with her friends. The people at the salon didn't ask her age or talk her through what she was meant to do.

"After the first 12 minutes she thought that it hadn't worked so she went back and asked for another nine minutes.

She didn't wear any goggles so she was staring into the bulbs with her eyes open the whole time."

Later that evening, Ms Turner heard cries coming minutes, but she looked like she had been lying in the sun for two days."

Philip Glancey, who runs the tanning parlour in Nightingale Avenue, Darlington, said Katie told him she had used the beds before, and was served by another member of staff when she came back the second time.

"She did it all underhand,"

said Mr Glancey, who runs his business separately from the Head to Toe hair salon, which operates from the same premises.

"I advise people who have not been before to go on for no more than six minutes.

"I asked if she had been on a sunbed before and she said yes. I also told her the goggles were there, but she did not want to use them.

"She came back in the afternoon when I was out and my wife served her. She had no idea the girl had already been in.

"I have told the mother to come round to see me to speak to me.

"I have done everything by the book. I have put notices up to tell people what they can and can't do.

"When I first opened, I was concerned about kids from the nearby school coming in.

I asked the council if there was an age limit but there is no age limit. I don't let people in who are ten, 11 or 12 - but I could do. "She got herself burnt and is trying to make it look as if it's my fault."

A spokeswoman for Darlington Borough Council said officers would be interviewing the Turner family and the salon owners.

"The council's environmental health team is continuing to collect information about a possible offence," she said.

"Tanning salons should have proper systems in place to ensure customers do not exceed recommended usage."

How stupid!!!!

For starters what sort of parent lets a teenage girl of 15 go on a sunbed. And it takes 24hrs for a tan. What sort of an idiot goes on a sunbed twice in one day???

Darlogurl, says...
8:58am Fri 11 Jul 08

What a stupid girl! There are signs all over tanning salons stating not to go on more than so many times a year and def not than once a day! And not wearing googles? That is why children shouldn't be allowed on sunbeds as they just don't pay attention to warnings. The law needs to be changed to stop these sort of things happening. Why can't kids just be kids. I really hope the tanning salon doesn't get blamed for the stupidity of one person.

Geoff, Darlington says...
9:25am Fri 11 Jul 08

Yet again, another instance of parents not accepting responsibility for their childrens actions, but looking to blame other innocent parties.
Also, did the Council official think before she spoke, when talking about 'proper systems'? How do you stop anybody from cooking themselves on a sunbed. The girl could easily have visited a number of salons to achieve the same results. Who would you blame then?

Lucy Vickers, Richmond says...

What does she expect after going on for over 20 mins - stupid girl, she ought to have more common sense! Sunbed shop cannot be held fully responsible. What an idiot!!!

Stupid girl! The parents blaming the sunbed shop it is not the responsibility of the sunbed shop to to keep 15 year old kids out, it is the parents responsibility if she is that desperate for a tan get her the tinted body lotion at least this way she won't end up getting skin cancer!

Kate, Newton Aycliffe says...

I don't really think there is any need for calling her a 'stupid girl' do you people no this girl personally????? She may be a decent memeber of the public and has made a mistake and is paying the price - has any of your Children never made any mistakes!

she is known around the area but i don't believe that her mother said she couldn't go on the sunbeds she is just looking for a way to pin the blame on someone else

How stupid can one person be?? I go to school with this lass, and to be perfectly honest, it doesn't surprise me! She's made the mistake, she's in the wrong, and she can't accept it, so she's trying to blame someone else.

She very well maybe a decent member of the publi as may her parents and yes im sure our children have made mistakes but it's of no fault but their own, the story sounds like the mother is clearly trying to blame the sunbed shop what do they have to do next advertise babysitting services.

Yes i do know this girl personally. And i know the sunbedshop personally aswell, fair enough they should have a record of when everybody visits the sunbeds but it doesnt take a lot to know the limits of sunbeds and their is nothing more they could of done if she did not want to take the goggles when offered! She is paying the price now, but i dont think anything more could be done with the sunbed shop and i wouldnt like them to be given all the blame over one person.

Most 15 year are 'stupid'. There were no sunbeds when I was a teenager but I certainly baked in the sun without sunscreen to get a tan. Their priority is looking good and I suspect however much her mother said it was dangerous she would have ignored her, You cannot keep constant tags on a 15 year old and my own teenager went on sunbeds without my permission. The girl will have learned the hard way.

I know this girl, and i'd expect her to do this sort of thing. What an idiot! She can't blame the tanning salon when SHE was the one who spent 20 minutes there. Its like trying to blame MFI when you burn yourself on your oven!

anon, Darlington says...
12:16pm Fri 11 Jul 08

How dare she and her mother try to blame someone else. She is hardly a pillar of the community. It is her own fault. She is 15 will leave school next year.Doesn't she have better things to do with her time rather than get burnt.Serves her right!!!

anon, Co Durham says...
12:34pm Fri 11 Jul 08

I think that she is trying to pass the book. Yes the shop should have had better procedures in place to ensure that 1 she was 16 and 2 check that she had not been on within 24 hours. But lets face it she is old enough to know better and shoudlnt have been so stupid. If my daughter went behind my back in this was I would be motified as it just shows how much respect she hasnt got for her family

M., says...

If I was that stupid,I sure wouldn't want my picture in the paper. It's entirely the girl's fault and not the firm's. Another case of someone trying to get money out of a compnay for something that is their own fault.

Danie, Bishop Auckland says...

I think its all rather unfortunate, its just another example of young people not realising the extent of things. We've all done stupid things in our youth and I think we would heed well to remember that, however we all also had to take responsibility for those mistakes as does this young lady. I believe the fault lies with the law and that it should be plain and simple that nobody under 18 should be allowed to use sun beds!

This is so not the same. The girl who had "supermarket" tatooed on her stomach was swindled out of her money. Katie, on the other hand has definaely made the mistake here.

Yes the girl has been stupid and should be made to realise how irresponsible she's been. It's difficult to defend her actions, but she is only 15 and surely it is the duty of the salon to protect young people from themselves. At the end of the day, she has a terribly burned back as a result of a service provided by the salon - surely they've got to take some responsibility.

Oh dear, durham says...
10:34am Sat 12 Jul 08

Very interesting-, so where do i start ?.
Ok, who is to blame ?, well that would be both katie and the salon. Who would win in a court of law ?, that would be katie. You see, as most people know there is no legal age limit in the uk to use tanning equipment, but health and safety executive says no person under 16yrs of age should use tanning equipment, it also says that people should not use sunbeds twice within 24hrs period, it also says that you should not exceed the recommended times, (THIS WOULD NEVER BE 12MIN ON FIRST SESSION)let alone another 9min later the same day.
All companies have to go by the HSE, or they may find they have no insurance cover.
i could go on and on but the point is that this girl has been very silly and should have known better, The salon has been totaly ignorant and is putting its customers at risk. Yes i agree that katie could have gone to another salon later that day, but then she would loose in court, she would be totaly to blame.
This is the type of thing the press love to report, this is also the type of thing that gives tanning salons a bad name, even on page 20, shoptalk-Mrs Griffiths, babies and toddlers - opt for SPF 30 or 40, sorry but it should be SPF 50+.
Anyway i hope katie is ok soon and that people learn from her mistake, everyone has there opinion and mine is the salon is at fault here.
Oh and by the way, I AM A TANNING SALON OWNER.

I live in Canada, not the UK...
However we do have SmartTan Certified salons. Considering that it is called SmartTan International I am amsuming that they would have this is the UK as well, if not something similar. This is not a chain of tanning salons either, it is simply a company with by law you're suppose to certifie your salon and workers under.

Although I feel no sympathy for this girl since we have all been educated on what over-expusure to the sun will do since we were little, the workers should have better educated her to avoid this accident.

Banning "children".. or in other words teenagers, from tanning bed would be absolutly ridiculous. We're starting to live in a world now that bans anyone under the age of 18 (sometimes even 21) from making lifestyle choices of their own. I agree with the Drinking Laws as well as Drugs and many others, however it is now becomming harder and harder to get your drivers license due to continuously stricter laws and even kissing now in some areas.

The people who pass these new laws did not have to live with them since they are obviously of age. I wish for once people would make decisions while putting themselves in that persons shoes.

Tanning beds prevent from worse sun burns outdoors, although they may be just as dangerous as the sun would you rather your child be tanning outdoors in a non-controlled environment or in a tanning bed where UV exposure as well as eye protection are available?

The entire earth knows the sun, banning the use of tanning beds will only cause people to tan outdoors more frequently, causing more sunburns and in turn skin cancer.

that is just my opinion, thank you
