THE number one beef animal was a magnificent Beef Shorthorn bull by the name of Thrasher.
Cairnsmore Thrasher to give him his full name had also taken the breed championship at this year's Royal Highland and Royal Shows where he was also reserve interbreed.
The six year-old is owned by Mark Holmes from Wolverhampton who bought him from Michael Abraham's of Ripon. Mr Holmes also won the junior breed title with his home-bred 18 month-old Holmeere George.
The reserve beef champion was Millington Tangerine, a British Limousin cow owned by J Weatherill of Millington, near York.
Husband and wife Steve and Gilly Johnson of Huby, near York, took the Beef Shorthorn female title with Bilsdale Sapphire Zanna, a 27 month-old which they bought as a calf at foot from David Hollingsworth of Chopgate, Bilsdale. She was reserve breed champion at the North Yorkshire County Show last month.
Mr and Mrs Johnson also took the reserve junior title with their home-bred 16 month-old Gilven Sapphire Acantha.
Mr Johnson is a self-employed farm worker and has a dozen Beef Shorthorn on rented land. He is rearing and selling them as breeding stock.
"These older native breeds are now coming forward, they finish better off grass and forage so are cheaper to rear and they have a very placid nature," he said.
In the South Devon's J P Harrison of Tollerton, near York, took the male, junior and reserve breed championships with Brafferton Starbuster, a 17 month-old bull.
The Salers title went to Rigel Pdigree of Middleton on Leven, near Yarm, and Rigel Helena, a home-bred cow born in 1997.
The breed and female champion was Grove Willowherb 21, born in January 1999, and owned by Mr and Mrs W H D Scott of Moreton-in-Marsh, Gloucester. They have a 90 strong pedigree suckler cows and followers totalling 250 head.
Willie and Michael Seels of Hooton Pagnell, Doncaster, won the female and British Blonde championship with Burghwallis Star, a seven year-old cow, and the reserve places with Burghwallis Cadbury, a 13month-old heifer.
They also took the reserve junior championship in the British Blue sections.
The Aberdeen Angus breed and female champion was won by Jane and Juliet Swires of Wilsill, Harrogate, and their seven year-old cow Cragg Minneapolis Bell.
The runner-up was tree Bridge Pelton, a 28 month-old bull shown by Messrs D & P A Evans of Tree Bridge Farm, Nunthorpe, middlesbrough.
The Hereford title was won by J B Henry of Brighouse, West Yorkshire, and the bull Aldersley I Dwight. Runner-up was Alvian 1 Dreamboy another bull shown by A & S G Stevenson and Sons of Alfreton, Derbyshire.
The Dexter title went to S Hunt of Sowerby Becks Farm, Sowerby, Thirsk, and his 11 month-old calf, Northbrook Caroleanne While the Highland title went to Anne Baraugh of Bridlington and her two year-old heifer, Bachy Mor of Easton, which also took the breed female and junior championships.
The commercial beef champion was N E Slack of Newby, Penrith and a Limousin x Limousin cross.
The supreme dairy championship was won by Ayrshire breeder Blaise Tomlinson & Son of Loughbrough, Leicestershire, with Sandyford Clover 10, a six year-old third calver which is currently yielding 42kg of milk.
She has previously won the breed title and reserve interbreed title at the Great Yorkshire as a heifer and was breedchampion and reserve interbreed at the Royal.
The reserve supreme dairy title went to the Jersey breed champion, Pavenham Iven 9 a third calver owned by Paneham Jersey of Boston, Lincolnshire. She was reserve champion and reserve supreme at the East of England Show and reserve breed champion at Lincolnshire. They also took the reserve breed place with Pavenham Iben 12, a heifer in milk.
The reserve Ayrshire and breed junior champion was Liverton Ke Horn a two and a half year-old home-bred heifer shown by Messrs G & B Stevenson and Sons of Blue House Farm, Liverton, near Saltburn, on her first outing in a show ring.
The Dairy Shorthorn champion was Churchroyd Heather 24 shown by Ian Collins of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire,who also took the reserve polace with Churchroyd Peggy 6, a cow in milk.
The Holstein title went to Goostrey Coll 225 shown by Baty & Williamson of Stocksfield, Northumberland. The reserve was Cleeton Jordan Glenna an intermediate cow shown by P J Waring of Cherry Burton, near Beverley.
