Fire crews spent more than five hours battling flames at a disused warehouse in Darlington last night.

Police are still waiting for the building to be secured before they carry out investigations, but early indications are that the blaze was started deliberately.

Darlington Fire Service was called to the building at Whessoe Road at 9pm on Monday night. The fire was finally extinguished at 2am this morning.

Officers are still damping the site down to make sure cylinders containing explosive acetylene gas are kept at a safe temperature.

Its not an insurance job certainly that was not the primary concern.. this is a part of a growing trend amongst derelict and disused or empty buildings. basically businesses are now forced to pay FULL business rates on empty properties that they could previously had zero rated. just look at all the recent fires on business properties and all the demolition going on.... the school on salters lane and the one at the bottom of north road the big factory at the top of yarm road... empty and zero rate before april.. and mysterious fires before april arrived (when the law came in) the schools were council owned yes but central goverment gets the business rates not local council..and now the land is nice and clear for building on (before) the property market went sour) all sorts of empty buildings will go this way or be ground to rubble as Gordon browneye tries to shaft businesses in new and interesting ways.
