THREE schools have been given permission to erect cycling shelters on their grounds.

Longfield School, Branksome School and Corporation Road Primary School will each add a number of shelters.

The three Darlington schools received permission for the shelters from the borough council's planning committee this week.

Between them, they will provide more than 200 spaces. Longfield School's shelters will accommodate 102 cycles, Branksome will add two shelters for 60 cycles and Corporation Road will have room for 40 cycles.

The applications, made by the council's director of corporate services, are part of the council's programme to encourage as many people as possible to cycle to school.

Funding has been received under the Sustainable Travel and Cycling Demonstration Town schemes.

No objections were made to the latter two applications, but two objections were made to the bid at Longfield School, because the land was prone to flooding.

Longfield's shelter will be built on the schools tennis courts and any flood water diverted onto the school drive rather than towards neighbouring houses.
