Mother and baby taken to hospital following car crash

A MOTHER and her baby were taken to hospital after the car they were in crashed in a village where a reduced speed limit is set to be enforced.

The accident at Evenwood Gate, near West Auckland, came a day after the Highways Committee at Durham County Council agreed that the 60mph speed limit on the A688 road which passes through the village was too fast.

It is hoped the soon-to-be introduced 40mph speed limit will cut the amount of road accidents.

The smash took place at about 11.30am yesterday after a sudden downpour.

Police believe the weather, combined with an oil spillage on the road, caused the male driver of a silver Ford Mondeo to lose control.

The car, which was travelling towards West Auckland, came off the road by the junction to Evenwood, smashing into a stone wall and a metal bench.

Four police cars attended the scene and a woman passenger suffering from minor head injuries was taken to hospital. Her baby was also taken to hospital as a precaution for checks.

An elderly male passenger in the car, who was suffering from shock, was cared for by a local resident. The male driver, though shaken, was unhurt.

Anyone who saw the accident should call Bishop Auckland Police on 0845-6060365.
