Football stadium ban for racist woman, 44

A MIDDLE-AGED woman has been banned from watching a North-East football team for directing racist taunts at black players.

The 44-year-old, who has not been named, was arrested by police following her behaviour at Middlesbrough's Riverside Stadium during the Premier League clash with Wigan on January 29.

Wigan have a number of black players, including England international Emile Heskey, while Middlesbrough have George Boateng in their ranks.

Plain-clothed officers from Cleveland Police's football intelligence unit acted following complaints made about the woman's verbal abuse.

The woman, who attended Middlesbrough police station and received a caution for the offence, has now been banned from attending home matches.

Yesterday, the club warned that an equally tough line will be taken against other offenders.

A club spokesman said: "We are proud of our record on combating racism at the Riverside and, fortunately, it has never been a major problem.

"Nevertheless, we are certainly not complacent and will crack down hard on any incidents of racist abuse.'' The spokesman said the club worked closely with the Kick it Out and Show Racism the Red Card organisations in combating racism, and was determined to uphold its reputation as a familyfriendly stadium where people of all races and religions are given equal respect.

Detective Constable John Stokeld, of the football intelligence unit, said: "Going to a football match is very much a family event, and the last thing you want your children to hear is racist insults being shouted at the players.

"Cleveland Police is committed to the Show Racism the Red Card campaign and we are determined to stamp out racism on the terraces to ensure that the game can be enjoyed by everyone.'' Det Con Stokeld added: "Any fans who hear racist or prejudicial shouts at football matches can contact the football intelligence unit on 01642-326326, and we will investigate."

Middlesbrough chairman Steve Gibson received an award from Show Racism the Red Card in 2003.
