POLICE are investigating after a man apparently jumped in front of a high-speed train today.
Officers from British Transport Police were called to the scene about a mile south of Northallerton station just after 3pm.
A spokeswoman said: "A man was struck and killed by a National Express service travelling from King's Cross to Newcastle.
"The incident is being treated as none suspicious.
"The driver apparently saw the man jump out into the track in front of the oncoming service."
A Trans Pennine Express train to Manchester Airport was held in the station until the track was reopened in both directions at 4.20pm.
The National Express service was also allowed to continue on its journey.
One passenger headed for Manchester Airport said: "They didn't tell us what had happened but we could guess."
Another traveller said: "I was just about to buy a ticket when they told me not to bother as someone had jumped in front of a train."
Firefighters and ambulance crews also attended the scene.
