Gary Smith, 38, of Lilac Avenue, Sacriston, was found guilty of a dwelling burglary, criminal damage to police property and wasting police time and sentenced to three years at Newcastle Crown Court today.

On December 30, Smith forced entry into the property of a recently deceased man in Rose Crescent, Sacriston and stole a tablet and glass decanters.

He also caused damaged to the door of a police station and stamped on a microphone while being interviewed by detectives.

Detective Constable Sarah Hindmarsh said: “Smith is a prolific burglar who is well known in the Sacriston area.

"It’s a small community and many of the residents in the area will feel safer knowing he is in prison, where we hope he can get the help he needs to stop reoffending.”
