CRICKETERS from opposite sides of town came together for a friendly fixture for two good causes.

Spennymoor and Tudhoe Cricket Clubs held the inaugural David Curry Memorial Cup tie on Friday.

The event, at Tudhoe, raised £990 for Spennymoor Cricket Club which was the victim of an arson attack on July 7.

The home side won the trophy, donated by Keiron Cain of Spenny Sports, by seven wickets. The cup will become a annual event in memory of Mr Curry, a player and volunteer at sports clubs throughout the Spennymoor area, who died in 2016.

Spennymoor chairman Mel Groves said: "Two umpires were going to do it for free but felt it was dangerous because of the rain but people wanted to play so we did ten overs.

"It turned out to be a tremendous night. Everyone knew each other, lots of people turned out despite the weather and the atmosphere was brilliant. We're overwhelmed by the support."

He thanked everyone who supported the event including singer Steve Fothergill and Janey Curry and Caroline Thexton who collected donations.

The next fundraiser will be at Spennymoor WMC on Friday, September 28, when there will be live music. Tickets are £5 from club, Mr Groves or The Victoria pub.
