A DRIVER was seriously hurt after his car drifted off the motorway and hit a fence before landing in a field.
The crash happened just before 7am yesterday between junction 58 and 59 at the Burtree interchange on the A1M, between Darlington and Newton Aycliffe.
The Peugeot 207 was travelling north when it drifted off the carriageway and collided with a fence before coming to rest in a nearby field.
The driver of the vehicle, a 51-year old man, was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough with serious injuries.
His three passengers were uninjured.
Police are now appealing for witnesses to the incident.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting incident number 56 of August 15.
