VISITORS to an important historic site and tourist attraction will be transported back in time this bank holiday.

Binchester Roman Fort, near Bishop Auckland, will hold a a day of living history on Monday, August 27.

There will be an encampment of Roman soldiers, complete with traders and artisans and a demonstration of Roman military skills with archery, slingshots and catapult artillery.

Barbaratus the Roman cavalryman will be show off his fighting skills on horseback and battles between groups of Roman soldiers and barbarians will be brought to life by re-enactors.

David Mason, Durham County Council’s principal archaeologist, said: “It is a thrilling day for all ages and an experience steeped in history you won’t forget.

"It is not every day you get to see a Roman battle in person.”

Visitors can also inspect fort remains including the richly decorated building which has replaced the former timber structure and protects the bath-building inside the fort.

Tours of recent excavation work will also be available.

Re-enactment events start at 11am and will be repeated at 2pm, approximately.

Ticket prices, which must be paid in cash, are £7 for adults, £6 for concessions, £5 for children and free for those aged four or under.

Roadworks on the route from Bishop Auckland market place to the fort, about a mile away, is ongoing so a diversion is in place. Access is only from the A688 and A690, which is signposted.
