A RAIL museum has announced a special guest star locomotive will be at the attraction next month.

No 70013 Oliver Cromwell will be at Locomotion in Shildon, County Durham, for its autumn steam gala on Saturday, September 22 and Sunday, 23.

The 55 Britannia Class locomotive worked the Fifteen Guinea Special, the last mainline passenger train to be hauled by steam power on British Railways, on August 11, 1968, before a steam ban started the following day.

Half a century later, it will feature in the finale of the museum’s Steam Season five month programme about the power of steam and its influence on the railways.

Visitors can enjoy steam train rides and access the footplate of a locomotive in light steam and there will be music, a miniature railway, family learning activities and displays from heritage and community groups.
