UNLOCKED vehicles have been broken into and valuables have been snatched.

Police in Shildon said a number of incidents of theft from insecure vehicles have taken place.

They have renewed an appeal to the public to ensure vehicles are left secure and no valuables are left on show.

A spokesperson said: "It only takes seconds for an opportunist thief to enter your vehicle and take your belongings.

"Please take that extra time and care to make sure that your vehicle is always locked and that you have left no belongings worth taking in view."

Last month Durham Police ran a campaign which aimed to reduce the number of incidents involving theft from motor vehicles by encouraging owners to keep their vehicles secure.

The force said figures showed in 17.6 per cent of the county’s most recent theft from motor vehicle incidents, the vehicles involved were unlocked or otherwise insecure.
