HUNDREDS of thousands of pounds has been handed over to community projects and good causes by a waste management company.

Each year, the Yorventure fund distributes money generated through the landfill operations of waste management company Yorwaste.

Environmental and community projects close to Yorwaste’s sites are eligible for the funding and awards totalling £666,723 were made to 29 projects this year.

Several projects in North Yorkshire benefitted from grants, including Catterick Village Sports Association who were given £6,282.

This meant the group could improve the exterior of their building through replacement of rainwater goods and cladding.

Meanwhile, Scorton Parish Council was given £25,000 to redevelop the village’s play area which currently consists of three pieces of outdated equipment.

The project aims to redevelop the park with equipment suitable for age groups from six months to 12-years-old, as well as providing picnic tables and seating.

Geoff Derham, group operations director of Yorwaste, said: “We are pleased that through our operations, we have been able to help so many local, community projects close to our waste sites across North Yorkshire and the City of York.

“2018 is Yorwaste’s 25th anniversary year and this latest funding takes the total provided over this period to more than £14 million, which is something we are very proud of.”

“There have been some excellent examples this year of projects which have received grants to improve the environment and the local community in general.”
