A CHILD has been seriously injured after he was knocked off his bicycle while trying to cross the road.


The 12-year-old boy was taken to James Cook Hospital after being hit by a car while trying to cross the A181 between Wheatley Hill and Wingate.
It happened at around 4pm on Thursday.


Police say the boy was trying to cross the road when he was hit by a Black Nissan Qashqai. 


He was taken to James Cook Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. 


Officers are now appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dash cam footage of the accident to come forward. 


A police spokesperson said: "The incident happened on the A181 between Wheatley Hill and Wingate on August 9 just after 4pm and involved a 12-year-old boy. 


"It is believed he was attempting to cross the carriageway when the Black Nissan Qashqai struck the cyclist. 


"The boy was taken to James Cook Hospital with serious but not life threatening injuries. 


"Officers are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or anyone with any dash cam footage of the collision to come forward."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service confirmed one person had been taken to hospital. 

The Great North Air Ambulance also attended the scene.
