THREE men posing as roofers stole a large quantity of cash from the home of an elderly man.

Durham police have appealed for information about the theft.

A spokeswoman said two men knocked on the door of a property in Bryan Street, Spennymoor, on Wednesday, claiming to be working at a neighbouring house.

They offered to carry out some minor repairs but during the conversation managed to distract the elderly owner. It was during this time one of them was able to go upstairs, where he found a large quantity of cash.

Both are described as white and aged between 40 and 50-years-old.

A third man, who may have entered the house, is believed to have been waiting in a car outside.

Officers are keen to trace the whereabouts of a silver Vauxhall Insignia, the estate model made between 2008 and 2011, with a roof rack and a large set of ladders. It is believed to have been in the Spennymoor area between 10am and 1pm on Wednesday.

Anyone with CCTV or Dash Cam footage of the car is asked to contact the on duty detective sergeant at South Durham CID on 101, quoting incident number 264 of August 8, 2018.
