MORE babies' graves have been damaged at a town's cemetery, just weeks after distraught relatives called for action over the issue.

Five headstones were uprooted at Bishop Auckland Town Cemetery last night, just weeks after more than 25 children's graves were vandalised at the same site.

Police were called just before 11pm last night following the incident and an investigation is now underway.

Inspector Andy Reeves, from Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Police Team, said: “This was an incredibly disrespectful act.

“We would encourage anyone who has any information on who is responsible to contact us.

“We are aware of ongoing issues with antisocial behaviour in and around the cemetery.

“It is a PACT priority for us and we currently have an ongoing project to tackle the issue, which has also been raised to sector target.”

Following the previous attack, partner agencies including the police, councillors and Durham County Council have said they are working together to find a solution to the problem and are considering installing CCTV.

If you have any information call Durham Constabulary on 101 quoting incident number 559 of August 6.
