ARMY boots for every Weardale man who lost his life in the First World War will go on display as part of an annual history festival this month.

The second Weardale Festival will be held in St Thomas's Church, Stanhope, from Saturday until August 12.

Planned by the church and the Weardale Museum, the theme of this year's event is the commemoration of the end of the First World War.

The exhibition displays are of different themes including VAD nurses, war memorials, agriculture and those who served and made the ultimate sacrifice.

The festival will officially be launched at 2pm on Saturday and include a showing of the film The Wear at War at 6.30pm.

The exhibition will then be open every day from 1.30pm and talks are planned for the weekday evenings which will take place at 6.30pm. Topics include North-East War Memorials, Trench Art, Gertrude Bell, Stanhope in the Great War and Prisoners of War Camps.

A display of army boots decorated with poppies and name tags, will also be available with Catterick Garrison donating a boot for every man from Weardale who lost his life.

History experts will be on hand to help with any Weardale family history queries following from last year's event.

The festival will end with a short service in the church on August 12, at 5pm when there will be the rededication of the roll of honour. Families of those commemorated on the roll are invited to pay their respects.

The family-friendly festival is free to attend but donations are welcome. For more details visit weardalemuseum.co.uk or call Kate Gill on 07990786220.
