PEOPLE setting fires and littering in a County Durham park has been condemned by police as “selfish behaviour”.

Crook Police took to Facebook yesterday to raise the alarm over an increase in recent weeks of anti-social behaviour (ASB) in Tow Law’s Millennium Green.

They have issued a warning that such behaviour will “not be tolerated” and anyone found to be acting in a disorderly matter will be dealt with “robustly”.

A spokesperson said: “Not only youths but young adults too have been attending the location, consuming alcohol, leaving a vast amount of litter behind both in the wooded area and within the park itself, setting fires, playing loud music until the early hours of the morning and behaving in a disrespectful manner overall as well as using foul language.

“This selfish behaviour is causing distress to the surrounding residents and those attending the park or walking their dogs.”

Fixed penalty fines have been issued to those believed to be providing alcohol to under 18-year-olds.

Those who have been caught by police will also receive written warnings and their details will be passed onto the ASB team at Durham County Council.

“If this behaviour continues, those who have already received warnings may potentially be issued with a Community Protection Warning”, they added.
