THE eight million horses, mules and donkeys that died in service during the First World War will be remembered in the Yorkshire Dales next month.

Four Coverdale churches will come together to host an open air service beside Pinkers Pond, Leyburn on August 12 in their memory.

Guests at the service will include the High Sheriff of North Yorkshire, Christopher Legard, who will be laying a wreath, and Countess Peel, who will be doing a reading. Music will be provided by brass band, Hawes Silver Band.

The service runs from 11.30am – 12pm and is being led by Rev Jeff Payne. All are welcome at the service, including mounted followers. Dogs are also welcome on leads.

Proceeds from the day will go to international working horse and donkey charity, Brooke, which is marking 100 years since the end of the war with its Every Horse Remembered campaign, which highlights the struggle of working horses, donkeys and mules of the past and present.
