DRIVERS were urged to avoid the A1(M) at Scotch Corner while police dealt with a serious incident on Monday evening.

North Yorkshire Police said officers were called to junction 53 Scotch Corner, and warned motorists the incident would involve significant delays.

The road was currently closed in both directions, with traffic diverted via the exit and entry sliproads.

It resulted in lengthy delays in the area, including on the A66. Long distance traffic going to/from the North-East was advised to use the A168 and A19.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police said at the time: "Please avoid the area and be patient – closing the road is not a decision taken lightly, but this is for the safety of all concerned."
