STUDENTS enjoyed a day of space-related lectures from famous faces.

Egglescliffe School welcomed names such as BAFTA nominated film director Professor Chris Riley and Associate Professor of Planetary Science at the University of Leicester, Dr Suzie Imber.

The day was a chance to broaden the horizons of students and draw links with the school’s space age history.

Dr Andrew Aldrin, son of Buzz Aldrin, joined the school via video link from Denver, USA.

He spoke about what it was like to grow up as the son of the second man to walk on the moon and answered a range of questions from the students.

The day was organised with the help of school alumni member Angie Watson, from the class of 1978.

Mark Cowan, deputy headteacher, said the children loved the experience.

“This was a wonderful day and we hope that this has broadened our students’ horizons," he said. "This is all about opening up opportunities for young people. All of our inspirational speakers began somewhere and we really believe that our students can go on to wonderful things themselves.”
