AN escaped llama inspired a bit of a drama in North Yorkshire this morning.

A walker was surprised to spot the animal contentedly trotting along a road between Bedale and Leeming Bar at around 10.30am.

After reporting the strange sighting to the police, the walker said: “I saw it and thought that horse is in a funny place, then I saw it wasn't a horse.

"It was looking very pleased with itself walking straight up the middle of the road.

"It wasn't distressed, it looked like it was enjoying itself.

"It was such a surreal moment."

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "We were called at about 10.30am this morning with a report that a llama was running in the road between Leeming and Bedale.

"About 20 minutes later, we received an update that the llama had been located by its owners and arrangements made to return it home, so it could cause no further drama."
