A PROPOSAL to build 16 affordable homes in Chilton could lead to the compulsory purchase of two houses and garages which stand in the applicant's way.

Durham County Council's area planning committee (south and west) will be recommended to approve Livin's plan when it meets in Spennymoor next Thursday.

Livin wants to redevelop two parcels of land at Hunter Terrace with ten two-bedroom bungalows and six two-bedroom houses for affordable rent to families, older and disabled people. If approved it would seek to compulsory purchase two private houses and a small number of garages to clear the site.

Planning officers say it would boost the mix and supply of housing in the town, remove garages and empty houses which are falling into disrepair and help regenerate Chilton.
