STUDENTS have been showing their brilliance thanks to a project designed to promote higher education.

Year 12 students from Richmond School and Sixth Form College joined the Brilliant Club, an initiative aimed at encouraging them to consider university life.

Their Brilliant Club mentor, a second year Phd chemical engineering student from Newcastle University, Paulius Rasiukas, said: “Maths has been the medium but this has been more about helping them discover a love of learning and to consider the benefits of going to university.

"It is about exploring what they are thinking rather than teaching them.”

Eight students joined the seven-week programme in March and will graduate with a Brilliant Club diploma at a ceremony at Durham University later this month.

Student George Mayo added: “It has taught me a new way of thinking and I am now considering reading aeronautical engineering at university.

"It has been so worthwhile, in fact, it has been brilliant.”
