FIREFIGHTERS have been tackling a fire at St Thomas More Roman Catholic Academy that started in the early hours of this morning.

At least five crews, about 20 firefighters, have been trying to put out the blaze at the school in North Shields.

The fire broke out at the school in Lynn Road at about 2am, and firefighters remain on scene.

There are no reported injuries and the school is expected to open today.

A spokesman for the school said: "Early this morning there was an isolated fire in part of the school building. As the building was empty nobody was at risk and early indications are that it started accidentally.

"As the fire occurred in part of the building that we can seal off, school will be open as normal."
