MIDDLESBROUGH Borough Council is to press on with a road-widening scheme on one of the town’s busiest routes despite the majority of responses to a consultation being against the plans.
It is hoped the measures to tackle congestion at the Southern Cross junction, where Dixons Bank meets Stainton Way, could help tackle the so-called ‘Marton Crawl’, a lengthy build-up of traffic on Marton Road at peak times.
Councillor Lewis Young, executive member for economic development, said: “Doing nothing is not an option.”
Councillors on Tuesday will discuss a report recommending that two lanes northbound and eastbound be created on the approaches to the junction in order to remove traffic ‘pinch points’ .
The planned improvements could be in place by 2020.
