PLANS to improve a town square and the cenotaph area have been unveiled.

The project to enhance Eston town centre is part of Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council's multi-million pound, borough-wide Area Growth Plans.

Details of the regeneration work have been made public and it is hoped work will start next month.

Councillor Ann Higgins, ward councillor for the area, said meetings had taken place with the Eston Going Forward Group, which is comprised of Eston Residents Association and the Chair of Eston Business Association, to discuss the plans.

She said: “This has taken a lot of work and we hope it will have a real impact on the look and feel of the town. I am especially pleased that the improvements to the cenotaph area will be made in time for this year’s special Remembrance Service.”

A total of £250,000 has been earmarked to develop new high quality paving around the war memorial, road-widening improvements, refurbished street furniture, new banner poles and other public realm improvements.

Cllr Bob Norton, the council's cabinet member for economic growth, said: “We hope to have the work around the cenotaph completed in time for the centenary of the end of the First World War in November when the town will come together to pay our respects to those who fell during that war.”
