A COMMUNITY came together at the weekend to honour the Armed Forces with what has become a traditional service in its town park.

The annual Drumhead service was held at Spennymoor's Victoria Jubilee Park to mark armed forces week.

The service guests of honour were the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of County Durham Maura Regan along with the Mayor of Spennymoor Councillor Clive Maddison and Mayoress Cllr Liz Maddison.

The Rev Matthew Tarling, vicar of St Paul's Church, lead the service which was attended by serving and veterans of all the Armed Forces, representatives from the Police, Cadet Forces and members of the public.

A temporary garden of remembrance was created where people wooden crosses in memory of loved ones.

The service is held in the way troops conduct religious services on the battlefield, with no church to attend its drums are draped in either national or regimental flags to create an alter.
