A MAN was taken to hospital with what are believed to be serious injuries after a disturbance in the centre of a County Durham town.

Witnesses described seeing the victim, a man aged about 50-years-old, laughing outside a pub in Ferryhill with two or three younger men before he was injured.

One young man was seen kicking him in the back as he walked across the road before another punched him on the side of the head.

A witness said: “There was a real thud and he hit the floor, spark out. I saw some people from round about go to help him but he was out-of-it.

“He was laid in the middle of the road until an ambulance came.”

It is understood the man was taken to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

His condition is not yet known and nobody from Durham Police was available to comment.

The incident took place at about 2pm on Wednesday afternoon in Durham Road.
