PUPILS and teachers, past and present, celebrated a school’s 50th anniversary at a summer garden party.

Witton-le-Wear Primary School moved to its present site in St James Gardens on the June 27, 1968, and half a century later the community came together to mark the milestone.

Youngsters were given special t-shirts and baseball caps to wear, and delighted parents and teachers with singing, dancing and musical routines in the playground.

A buffet lunch was served and a marque was set up where guests, including teachers who taught at the school in 1968, could look at a new book by local historian Anne Yuill celebrating the history of the school. The book also contained anecdotes from children about their favourite memories of school life.

Headteacher Mark Stephenson, one of only five heads at the school since 1968, said: “It’s been a great day and we couldn’t have asked for better weather. The school is special because of the relationships between children, staff and parents. It’s like one big family so children feel safe and enjoy coming to school.

“It’s wonderful to celebrate our 50th anniversary. I’m sure the next 50 years will be a success too.”
