THE Hoppings 2018, which expects record breaking crowds to return to the Town Moor in Newcastle, opened yesterday.

Over the years, The Hoppings has seen millions of people gather to experience all the fun of the fair and with soaring temperatures predicted, huge crowds are anticipated.

The annual event, held on Newcastle’s Town Moor, saw representatives from The Freemen of Newcastle, the Showman’s Guild of Great Britain and Newcastle City Council, as well as members of the public, gather together to hear Newcastle’s Lord Mayor, Cllr David Down, declare The Hoppings officially open for the 136th year.

Sir Len Fenwick, chairmen of the Freemen, said: “We are delighted to support this iconic fair that brings so much enjoyment to hundreds of thousands of people in the region. There’s so much on offer and something to suit all ages. It really is a place that provides fun for all.”

With more than 300 attractions there is fun for all the family, whether visitors want to “waltzer” their way through the night or gallop round the traditional favourites.

The Hoppings, Europe’s largest travelling funfair, will be open until Saturday, June 30, from noon to 11pm on the first weekend and 2pm to 11pm for the following week. Discount vouchers for rides are available from the Hoppings website.
