THE legacy of murdered MP Jo Cox will be honoured when people gather in her memory in Darlington this weekend.

On Sunday, crowds will come together in a celebration of unity at a mass picnic being staged as part of a nationwide initiative.

Ms Cox, who devoted her life to fighting against hatred and intolerance, was killed by a right-wing terrorist in June 2016.

The tragedy inspired the launch of The Great Get Together, which aims to continue her work by forging connections between people of all backgrounds and cultures and proving that – in Jo Cox’s words – “we have far more in common than that which divides us.”

Sunday’s event, taking place in South Park, is being organised by White Rose Darlington, an organisation campaigning against bigotry and hate crime.

White Rose also hope that the event will help to tackle loneliness, an issue campaigned upon by Ms Cox.

Open to all, it will feature an eclectic mix of live music from bands including Caribbean Cowboys, Abandoned Brothers, Mike May, the Blind Panic Ceilidh Band and Dead Bolt. There will also be a variety of stalls, arts and crafts activities and 'family fun'.

The free event begins at noon and people are encouraged to bring along food for the communal picnic.

Organiser Peter Greenwood, chair of White Rose Darlington, said: “Bring a picnic, come and join us around the South Park bandstand, whether you’re with family, in a group, or if you are on your own.”
