A 'HAPPY and loving' teenager killed in a car crash is set to be remembered with a special event as his family mark the first anniversary of his death.

Rhys Hemmingway’s family are preparing to hold a charity evening inspired by the 17-year-old, of Coundon, near Bishop Auckland.

Organised by his mum, Sam Hemmingway, and girlfriend, Olivia Sinclair, the pair want to give something back to Carmel College in Darlington, where Rhys studied.

Rhys, who has been described as a “conscientious, happy and loving young man” was driving back from college when his car collided with another on the A68 near Bildershaw Bank, West Auckland, on June 29 last year.

His death was described as a “tragic” accident and staff and students at the college rallied round the family to support them.

So far college tributes have included a quote used in Rhys’ funeral service being painted on the common room wall, while students’ leavers hoodies have proudly displayed Rhys’ name in orange so it stands out from the rest.

And now the duo hope to give something back by raising funds for an outside seating area at the college in Rhys’ memory.

“The college have been in constant touch with us all the way through, regularly making sure we are okay,” Mrs Hemmingway said. “They even offered to pay for his funeral and I cannot fault them for their continued level of support – it’s just amazing.”

The pair are hoping to raise £1,000 for the project which will involve installing a bench, tree and memorial plaque.

Mrs Hemmingway, 42, said the aim was to provide an area where students could take time to reflect, relax and make lasting friendships.

The fundraiser will be held at Coundon and District Working Men's Club on Saturday, August 18.

The night will begin at 7pm and highlights include a performance from the college band who will be performing his favourite song – Ed Sheeran’s Perfect.

Mrs Hemmingway said Rhys would be “over the moon” at the thought of a fundraiser.
