THE continuing fine weather got the centuries-old Appleby Horse Fair off to a colourful start on Thursday.
An estimated 30,000 people are expected to descend on the Cumbrian town over the weekend.
Although people have been arriving in Appleby over much of the past week, the fair officially got under way yesterday when young memers of the Gipsy and travelling communities began showing off their horses in traditional style in the River Eden.
The earliest record of the fair is in a charter from Henry II, dating from the 12th century, but it is believed to have a longer tradition than that.
