A GIN company is using home-grown ingredients to add a unique touch of flavour to the Great Yorkshire Show.

Masons Gin of Bedale were asked to come up with something new to mark the 160th anniversary of the show.

So they decided to create a special limited edition gin and cast around close to the show’s Harrogate showground home for inspiration.

That was when they came up with the idea of using apple blossom from the showground’s own trees.

Cathy Mason, who set up the award-winning distilling company with husband Karl five-years-ago, said the apple blossom gives a unique flavour to the special limited edition gin.

Just 100 bottles of the special edition will be available to buy at the Show.

Mrs Mason said: “We wanted to do something to mark this big anniversary and to tie our special distillation in with the show.

“The blossom has come from trees in the showground’s own orchard which were planted by the Northern Fruit Group in 2001, they’re from 15 Yorkshire heritage varieties dating back to the 1800s.”

Show Director Charles Mills said: “This year is a big celebration for the show and we are delighted that Masons are helping us to toast our 160th anniversary in true Yorkshire fashion and in a way that incorporates a real link to the showground and its beautiful landscape.”

The Masons developed their dry Yorkshire gin using a special secret recipe and expanded into a range of flavours including Lavender and Tea gin.

They’ve now won a host of awards including the UK’s Best Contemporary Gin and were the Gold Taste winners at the 2018 World Gin Awards.

The distillery is also no stranger to producing more uncommon flavours, with Sloe, Steve’s Apple and Peppered Pear among previous special editions.

Masons have exhibited at the show for the past four years and Mrs Mason described it as “exhilarating”.
