FARM gates across the region will be swinging open to the public next weekend.

Open Farm Sunday on June 10 gives the public a rare chance to see behind the scenes of working farms.

In the North York Moors National Park, Stonebeck Gate Farm at Little Fryup, near Danby, will be hosting sheepdog and gundog trials, as well as displays of sheep shearing, drystone walling and farming machinery.

Members of the National Park team will also be there with activities for children including a ‘spot the sheepdogs’ trail, craft activities and the opportunity to become a ‘Young Ranger’ by helping with stile and bridge building.

Doors open at noon until 4pm and refreshments will be available.

Meanwhile, at Wildon Grange, a working dairy and arable farm near Thirsk, visitors can visit calves, watch cows being milked and observe a veterinary display.

Sally Ann Smith, events co-ordinator at the North York Moors National Park Authority, said: “Taking part in Open Farm Sunday is always a highlight of our summer. “It’s entertaining for kids and grown-ups alike but also increases awareness of where our food comes from and the hard work that goes into producing it.”
